The front door opens to the Lotus House’s central light-filled three-story glass atrium. Wood-paneled roof trusses radiate out from the center of the home creating a grand entrance which sets the stage for the one-of-a-kind interiors. John Vulgrin, the craftsman who created many of the intricate custom details, labored for two decades on the building site. The curvilinear architecture of Kellogg's architecture is reminiscent of the fanciful creations of Antoni Gaudi in Spain, while the central fireplaces and geometric lines are shaped by teachings of Frank Lloyd Wright. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to local organizations working to protect and preserve historical landmarks in Southern California. The project is supported by contributions from a collaboration of photographers with varying levels of skills and experience, but a common interest in the place we all call home - Southern California.

Mr. Kellogg loved to have pipe organ music played for his guests on summer nights. The pipes are cleverly built into the built basement, creating a spacious area to store what was heard and not seen. Intended as a winter respite for W.K.’s family, the grounds offered an idyllic setting with winding roadways and terrain for walking, riding, or driving. Myron Hunt designed not only the main house and guest cottage you pass as you enter the main gate, but also the Arabian stables and the other ranch buildings, including the Manor House.

His first important engineering job was laying out the town of Elsinore in 1883. From 1894 to 1899, he was the Orange County Surveyor responsible for many of the county’s major roads and bridges. Scrolling through the events section on Facebook, I happened upon an invitation to visit the Heritage Museum of Orange County for a vintage marketplace called ‘Behind the Picket Fence’. Receptions are held outside in our spacious, scenic garden terraces and can accommodate up to 200 people. Smaller parties are welcome to use our charming Grand Room, complete with a cozy fireplace for a romantic ambiance. Additionally, the pipes from an organ were cleverly built into the basement, thus creating more space in the living area without sacrificing Kellogg’s beloved musical instrument. Although the home is 8,777 square feet, it evokes a more intimate feel because of its many rooms. The extra rooms allowed Kellogg House to serve as lodging for the Army during World War II.

Most prominent is the mast, salvaged from a ship in San Francisco, that stretches from floor to ceiling in the center of the house. When the Kellogg family invited guests, the home was a magnet for celebrities of their day, including former President Ronald Reagan, Walt Disney, Will Rogers, Rudolph Valentino, Gary Cooper and Charles Lindbergh. Kellogg and his famous guests would enjoy walking around the grounds and visiting the Arabian horses. The architectural décor is typical of a ranch-style house, but also features much finer details, such as the ceiling beams in the dining room where Kellogg’s initials are worked into the pattern.
