This volunteer opportunity takes place in a refuge for women and girls who suffered from severe domestic or gender-based violence. The women's refuge is located in the south of Quito. The refuge was founded in 1990 and has helped countless of women since then.

We got rid of most of the fencing, in exchange for keeping the barb wire, a few guys did it for free, and we now have a lot of wood that can be used for the works on the big room. We also sold the cattle scale that was on the land for $1300, and bought a boat motor and a few pieces of furniture that weren’t included in the house price for the same money. From the first day of scraping walls to the final day when they hand over the keys, building the home together is a once in a lifetime experience. “Every year I take over 30 high school students from Atlanta to build homes in Guatemala.

The family would now have more space, not have to sleep on dirt and cook 3 feet away from their beds. One time it popped when the dog stepped on it and she started crying really hard. But after all the fun with the balloons, it was time for the piñata. We set it up in their new house and took turns, youngest to oldest. Also, they would come up to me during lunch over the next few days and ask, “bazebol?

Working alongside of an adult is in their DNA. There is little to any pediatric ADHD in Central America. The children in rural Guatemala sleep well; it is exhausting to work for your basic needs from childhood on.
Lessons Learned from Building Houses in Guatemala
Being American isn’t about what we give tangibly or intangibly; it’s about what we have the privilege to share. Being America isn’t about bequeathing our values to an underprivileged, ‘backwards’ culture. It’s about sharing something sweet and something powerful. I hope I didn't completely change the pictured boy's life.
He is tall and rangy, and wore a blue hard hat. “In the United States, construction workers clean up after they’re finished for the day,” he said. American-inspired houses in the country’s western highlands are a daily reminder that opportunity lies elsewhere. Building a home in the guatemala city dump community will leave you a twisted mess.
Spacious Family Homes
The town was similar to Antigua with its cobblestone streets and lime plastered buildings, but you could tell the difference immediately. Our participants gain freedom, dignity and security, allowing them to live to their full potential.

After 10 years and close to 300 students and over 50 homes, the trips get better and better each year. Not only are we making a difference for the people of Guatemala, but the trips have greatly impacted the students, many of which have returned with their families to build again”. On a Saturday afternoon in February, Israel Vaíl, a forty-eight-year-old father of two, was cleaning up a construction site in his yard, on the outskirts of a town called Cajolá.
Brand New Homes
Our summer volunteers spend one week building cinderblock homes for families in desperate need of a stable house. Volunteers spend the entire week working alongside the families receiving the homes. It takes about 7 to 10 days to build a house for a family. Normally the volunteers help with the construction of the house from day one. The completion of the house and the subsequent ceremonial key handover to the family is for most volunteers a very emotional experience and a very special moment.

Happy New Year Joe, all the best for you and your family. Under $700 per person and per month, this number should go down with time. If you're looking for some inspiration for your everyday ordinary life, you've stopped in at the right place. While I'd rather be visiting over a cup of coffee, I pray you'll find encouragement here.

But around Day 3 when we partnered with the Guatemala Potter’s House I saw a way I could make a difference — at least to one. It was such a great feeling to feel like what we did would change each of their lives.

4.For the families selected by our social organization partners we build strong, safe, basic houses with a bathroom and shower. Your participation in this volunteer program should be derived from your desire to help the environment and the native population of the Peruvian rainforest.
