BUILDING HOMES

Join From Houses to Homes as they offer volunteers the chance to build homes for poor citizens in Guatemala. By the end of the week, it felt like time had gone by in a matter of hours. I had already been there for almost a week, but it felt much less. The last day was Friday, and since we were nearly finished we thought we would have a party in honor of the family. We brought balloons and a piñata filled with all kinds of candy. Like my grandparents, cousin, and I walked in we were greeted by the founder, Joe Collins.

The families who can benefit from the construction projects must in turn apply and be in possession of the land on which the house is to be built. Subsequently, the situation of the family is analyzed taking into account socio-economic aspects. Improvements were really, really cheap, getting a transparent roof for $500 totally changed the house for example. Most of the big spending is going into the new building, but DIY goes a really long way with very little. Quite reasonable to make a house liveable, start building a new room and live for two months. I didn’t think I could make a difference among this much poverty.

Harvesting fields, gathering firewood, nursing the newest baby and hauling laundry to the creek is the rural Guatemalan version of a workout. It is an honor to engage with these women in securing their housing. Our part feels like a small thing in light of the big issues they face.

The tough thing about the freedom and wealth that we, American Diplomats, possess is that we have the power to do a little good or tremendous bad. If we are not mindful of how we share our experience with others, then we will struggle to promote compassion effectively in the world. Our volunteer project is overseen by the National Forestry Agency, which is part of the Chilean Ministry of the Environment. Their responsibilities include the protection and control of Easter Island's natural resources through a variety of programs. The most important are forest fire prevention and control, erosion control, natural resource monitoring, the conservation of native flora and environmental education - among others. Recently, the project is setting up a climate protection program to prepare the local population for the consequences of climate change.

Working alongside of an adult is in their DNA. There is little to any pediatric ADHD in Central America. The children in rural Guatemala sleep well; it is exhausting to work for your basic needs from childhood on.

This volunteer opportunity takes place in a refuge for women and girls who suffered from severe domestic or gender-based violence. The women's refuge is located in the south of Quito. The refuge was founded in 1990 and has helped countless of women since then.

We began work pretty soon, and we also found out that a number of workers already started on Friday to lay the groundwork and measure. I was put on wire duty, in which I had to cut steel rebar to secure the concrete. After many turns and cutbacks, we had reached the current home of the Mixtun family. The road leading up to it was a dirt road, and surrounding it lay rows and rows of corn in which you could almost get lost in.

Border CrisisIn the western highlands of Guatemala, the question is no longer whether someone will leave but when. Because the shadow side of this historical ambience is the extreme poverty in which the majority of Guatemalan families live. Many families have no home or just a makeshift barracks made of cardboard, sheet metal and waste. Whole families live, eat and sleep often in just one room.

The poor turkey is not tied by the beach so that he doesn’t bother the hens, maybe in a few days he can be free again. What feels like we are spending a lot is we are constantly making checks to people, for material, wages, and paying things little by little. We sold the plastic roof cover that cost us $160 for $110 after one month of use to a neighbor with a leaking roof. No profit here but at least we got some money back to spend on the new transparent roof. Most of it was to register a limited company of which we each hold 50% of the shares. The family would now have more space, not have to sleep on dirt and cook 3 feet away from their beds. One time it popped when the dog stepped on it and she started crying really hard. But after all the fun with the balloons, it was time for the piñata. We set it up in their new house and took turns, youngest to oldest. Also, they would come up to me during lunch over the next few days and ask, “bazebol?

All the kids loved it and every time someone played a card, they would scream BS with enthusiasm. Eventually, they would have all the cards in their hand, but they didn’t care. They had huge grins on their little faces as if they were trying to show me how many teeth they had. I don’t know who came up with the idea, but somehow we decided to play BS, the card game. (I don’t know if you are familiar with the game, but basically, you play cards face down, and if people think you are lying then they say BS.

American-inspired houses in the country’s western highlands are a daily reminder that opportunity lies elsewhere. Building a home in the guatemala city dump community will leave you a twisted mess.
